OCYC 2020 JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM |
Sea Squirts Opti Camp is designed to introduce future junior sailors to the sailing environment. This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sportsmanship, and water safety. Instruction is done with 2 children in an Opti. Classes feature water games and play designed to prepare the future junior sailor for formal sailing instruction the following year. For Sea Squirts children must be 8 years old on or before 7/1/20 or entering the third grade in September, 2020, and must pass the Water Safety Test. Camp meets for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. A rental boat is included in registration fee. This class is for 8 and 9 year olds ONLY. The children may not be sailing during each class due to weather conditions.
This class is the program’s introductory or “learn-to-sail” class. This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, sportsmanship, and water safety. . Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the youngest sailors to fun on and around the water. We will not encourage racing in this class. Sailors will begin to sail the Optimist by themselves in this class. Optimist Sailors must be 10 years old on or before 7/1/20 or entering the 5th grade in September 2020, and must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. 10 year old sailors only qualify for this class. ( Limited rental boats available for an additional fee, but we encourage everyone to own their own boat for this class. ) | This class is designed for the new sailor OVER age 9 with NO previous sailing experience who want to participate in the sailing environment. Using the Sunfish sailboat this course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, sportsmanship, and water safety. Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the sailors to fun on and around the water. One person per boat, we will not encourage racing in this class. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. This class size is limited. (Limited rental boats available for an additional fee, but we encourage everyone to own their boat for this class. ) |
This program requires a solid understanding of Optimist or Sunfish sailing and provides an introduction to racing and race equipment. Sailors must have completed Intro to Optimist or Sunfish Sailing and be recommended for advancement by the instructor staff. Coaches will cover all aspects of racing on and off the water. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. 11 and 12 year old sailors qualify for this class. (Limited rental boats available for additional fee, but we encourage everyone to own their boat. First come, first serve on leasing a club boat.) | This class is designed for those who want to be on the water but aren’t necessarily interested in racing. Bay Explorers will provide additional sailing instruction through the use of a recreational format. The class will take sailboat trips to local points of interest. This is not a learn-to-sail class. Students must demonstrate boat-handling skills equivalent to those required after taking Intro to Opti Racing. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. (Providing your own boat is encouraged, but we will provide boats to participants at no charge.) |
5 day program for 5-7 year olds to introduce them to sailing and the yacht club. Dates are from Aug 10-14 from 9 AM until noon. Activities may include:
All participants must have their own appropriately sized US Coast Guard-approved life jacket with between legs strap Fee is $150 per child Parent, grandparent or guardian must accompany children for boating activities (2 days) | This is a third year for the program this summer. Please introduce your grandchildren to sailing with OCYC. Any child age 7 and older is welcome. The children will be sailing with instructors on the various boats at the yacht club. The program will be offered for a week (TBD) in the month of July from 9:30-12:30. This is a great way for children to get a feel for the water and enjoy a morning of sailing. Please stay for lunch. Students must pass the Water Safety Test. |
| Rocking Chair Regatta Remember sailing a short course in front of the club, with PC Parker as MC?? These races were fun and they are back!! The sunfish fleet will be used for these races. Stayed tuned for details. These races are open to all yacht club members, so come one come all.
